Who we are

Members of Mid Kent campaigning in 2021 in High Street, Rochester

Our History

In 2016 the United Kingdom voted by a slim majority of 3.8% (51.9% to 48.1%) to relinquish its membership of the European Union. All over the country pro-Europeans began to gather to oppose what they perceived to be in anything but the nation’s best interests. A number of organizations emerged, but one that had existed longer than the European Communities themselves was discovered by many: the European Movement UK. It was this movement, started in the late nineteen-forties by, among others, wartime Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill, which had had the vision of a united Europe, freed from the curse of continual conflict and warfare.

Such a group gathered in Rochester, in December of 2017 to discuss the formation of a branch of the Movement. Initially proposed as a Medway branch, it was inaugurated at a meeting in Twydall, Gillingham, on 3 January 2018. It was soon decided that the new branch should encompass not just the Medway Towns, but also Gravesham to the west, Maidstone to the south, and Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Faversham to the east.

Who We Are Now

In December of 2019 a General Election returned a sizable majority of MPs determined that the UK would cease to be a member of the EU. Their desire was achieved on 31 January 2020, and since 1 February our country is no longer a part of one of the greatest peace projects ever conceived.

Our objective is to continue to commend and promote the shared values which have underpinned the European Union since its first inception as the Coal and Steel Community. In our promotion of those values we are also implicitly and explicitly promoting the value of membership of the Union, and working for the day when our nation awakes from its current erroneous state of mind and seeks to reunite with our sisters and brothers on the continent of Europe.
