Next month, June, will mark the 10th anniversary of the referendum on our continued membership of the European Union.

Very few will maintain that the decision to leave has had a beneficial effect on the life of the United Kingdom. Instead of “taking back control”, world events have conspired to show us how beholden we are as a nation to other nations; how intertwined our fortunes are.

The running theme of this year, promoted by the European Movement UK, is “We are still European”, and the mood at European level, is that the united Kingdom will be welcomed back into the fold, as soon as we are truly ready.

At the time of writing, Mid Kent group has already taken twice to the streets of Medway to hand out postcards, engage in conversation with passers-by, recruit new supporters and members and even accept donations via our newly acquired electronic point-of-sale terminal.

The ninth of May is Europe Day, when we celebrate the announcement on this day in 1950 of the principals, outlined by former French Prime Minister, Robert Schuman, and known as the ‘Schuman Declaration’. This led in 1951 to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the first organization in what would eventually become the European Union which we know today.

The group will be marking the day with the third street stall of the year. And we intend to campaign around our region of Mid Kent throughout the rest of the year.

However, in June the focus will be on the fourth National Rejoin March in London, on Saturday 20th.

We’ll look out for you there!
